The AT&T monopoly effected the Telecommunications industry in ways that are good and bad. The monopoly caused the government to break AT&T up and started to regulate the industry which allowed for competition. Allowed for more inovative ideas. Another good thing from the monopoly allowed AT&T to build the phone infrastructure so there was one standard.
The bad thing was that AT&T control the price of phone service. Also they could control at what rate the was inovations the research and development. There also was no competition in the phone industry.
Scott says,"It was a matter of the BIG guy trying to squash the little guy." Fred says, "AT&T's monopoly stiffled development of both new compitition, and new technology." John says,"AT&T's monopoly helped in early development of the industry." Kevin says, AT&T's monopoly indeed stiffled development of new technology, and new compitition, but it also supplied an excelent product."
1) New technology by competitors was stifled by AT&T's monopoly.
2) The number of technical advances was probably limited due to a limited number of research centers and researchers.
3) Limited resources; by owning a monopoly, they prevented other companies from adding to their own resources.
4) During the monopoly, AT&T caused other companies to struggle getting their products introduced, and put on to the market. In order for companies to stay established with telecom products, they would have to get past the over dominating company.
